Ten of Swords description
In this card, a person is stabbed in the back ten times, the swords running down his spine. He is face down on the ground, in the most hopeless of predicaments. His face is turned to the dawn or the sunset, the light appears in the distance. This is the end of a long, dark night of the soul. There is a stillness to the water, a stillness to emotions at this point in time. The fact that there are ten swords shows that this is overkill. One sword would have killed the man, but ten? Is that really necessary? This was not the man’s fault, he could not have done this to himself. His right hand is in the shape of the Japanese “kichjijo-in” mudra, a symbol of good fortune and joy.
Upright meaning
The Ten of Swords shows up when you’ve met a painful yet inevitable ending. This energy can manifest as a physical process of heightened self-awareness that aids you in healing yourself. It can appear when you are dealing with chronic pain or back issues, as well as if you’re undergoing surgery or acupuncture treatment. It can show up as an opportunity to give up old mental constructs and develop a new alignment with higher energies. As the ending of one chapter and the beginning of something fresh and new. You have learned some difficult lessons, but the lifting of these false perceptions is allowing for new insight.
Reversed meaning
Reversed Ten of Swords is a sign that you are overwhelmed, facing ruin or defeat. This energy is more about how you are reacting to your problems, rather than the problems themselves. Take time to reflect on each moment before it passes by. What is has been and will never be again. A new dawn is rising. Surrender to the changes or practice detachment from the outcome. This is both a completion and a new beginning. This is a sign that your suffering will come to an end. Release what is no longer serving you.
