The Lovers description
The Lovers depicts Adam & Eve in paradise, the Garden of Eden. They are blessed by the Angel Raphael whose name means ‘God heals’. Eve is standing before a fruit tree with a serpent wrapped around it, symbolising physical pleasures as a temptation from the Divine and the knowledge of good and evil. Adam is standing before a tree that is on fire with twelve flames representing passion that results in new life. It’s the tree of life with the twelve zodiac signs. They find enlightenment in the Garden of Eden and their nudity is a reflection of their openness and vulnerability with one another. The man’s gaze is towards the woman, showing his love for her. She gazes above towards the angel, seeing a higher connection to their love.
Upright meaning
The lovers indicate you have harmony in your relationships with others. This can represent all types of love, including romance, friendship, family, etc. You are being open and honest with your feelings and considering the basis of your choices. In turn you find that sharing with others enriches your own experience and you find a deeper significance in life when your life is shared with people you love. In a relationship spread, this card is a sign that a couple has a happy health, relationship, comparable to ‘the honeymoon phase.’ It represents twin flames meeting in heart, mind, and body.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the Lovers asks you to focus on your love for yourself. You are finding the beauty in treating yourself, enjoying some alone time, getting to know yourself better. You are being open and honest with yourself and balancing your inner wisdom with your outer desires. In a relationship spread, the reverse can be a sign that the couple is experiencing stress caused by factors outside of the relationship or the home and that they need to keep the love strong for themselves and for each other. If you struggle to see yourself the way that other people see you, then practice seeing yourself through their eyes. And just fall in love with yourself. You are pretty awesome.
The Lovers quote
“Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.” -Lucille Ball
